So hopefully everyone has recovered from zee Margaritas last dinner. Even though they have an entirely offensive name, Boomer Swirl, I think I will definitely have to order those again. Anyway...dinner this month? Anyone?

We decided when it was cooler to do another outside one. Well actually we didn't get to be outside the last time, but that was the intent...stupid rain. Today is hot and stifling though so I'm thinking that maybe outside is going to cause my hair to go to the eternal frizz zone. Anyone else get curly hair late in life an not know what to do with it? I'm thinking bald and a wig.

Hey...that would be a good topic for discussion. Any weird things that have happened to your body lately that have thrown you for the loop?

My camera was left in Livelee's car (don't know why...3 glasses of wine perhaps?), and I haven't retrieved it yet. I'll put up my pics later.

I know Livelee already posted her picture, but here's mine with less weirdness. It was a small crew this time, but we had fun. And I discovered that I could eat sushi even though I have that weird fish allergy. And boy have I been eating it! Just ask Big Tea or Big D. Anyway, I'd like to say we're having sushi again, but I think people would roll their eyes at me. So instead we're trying something new!

November Dinner Debate

Well the food was mediocre, but the company was good as usual. And, for some reason I forgot to take a picture...AGAIN! But, I never posted the picture from bowling last year and since it was an excited topic of discussion. Here you go!

For November we are meeting November 15 at 7pm. However there has been discussion about where. Here are your choices: Kaffe Bona at 81st and Memorial or Cosmo Cafe at Memorial between 71st and 61st. So, let's vote and majority wins! Voting closes this Friday at noon.

Heyka Zambrano has become an accomplished chef in two cuisines, one acquired by heritage and training and the other by marriage and experience.

With the recent opening of Heyka's Heimat restaurant in Broken Arrow, she now has a German restaurant to go with her three Arizona Mexican restaurants in the Tulsa area.

Zambrano was reared in Wesselburen in northern Germany, just miles from the Denmark border. She calls it a "three-dog town," but photos depict a beautiful country laced with waterways, and research reveals poet and dramatist Friedrich Hebbel, renowned scientist Ernst Lueneburg and fashion designer Jil Sander were born there.

Zambrano obtained a culinary degree in Germany and cooked in hotels in Frankfurt before her marriage to Isabel Zambrano eventually brought her to Oklahoma, where her husband co-owned the Arizona Mexican restaurants. Isabel Zambrano died two years ago.

"I rather inherited the Mexican restaurants from my brother-in-law," said Heyka. "I always wanted to have a German restaurant, too, and I finally decided to do it."

The blond, blue-eyed mother of three drew from different culinary regions of Germany, especially Bavaria, Baden, Rhineland and Westphalia, plus "my own favorite recipes" to develop the menu for Heyka's Heimat (heimat translates to home or homeland).

Some items on the menu are listed with their German names plus an explanation in English, and some are listed only with their English translations. We will go with how they are presented on the menu.

Potato pancakes ($4.25) -- shredded potatoes, lightly seasoned and fried -- with a side of unsweetened applesauce sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon was a nice, traditional way to begin our meal, but that dish couldn't hold a candle to another appetizer, sauteed mushrooms with sour cream dip ($5.25).

The latter dish included 12 plump mushrooms that had been sauteed with onions and butter, and served with bowls of herb-flavored sour cream sauce. The flavors melded perfectly.

Favorite entrees among our group of six included geschnetzeltes ($7.50), schweinefilet ($8.95), jaeger schnitzel ($8.50) and sauerbraten ($9.95).

Geschnetzeltes featured creamed beef cooked with onions, mushrooms and bell peppers, and served with spaetzle and cucumber-tomato salad. Spaetzle, translated as "tiny sparrows," are small noodles often served with dishes that have gravy or other sauces.

Schweinefilet included two slices of baked pork tenderloin topped with tomatoes and cheese. It came with sides of potato pancakes and zingy cabbage-and-carrot salad.

Jaeger schnitzel -- a breaded pork cutlet (veal also is available) -- was topped with brown gravy, a large slice of mushroom and tiny bits of parsley, and served with fried potatoes and 14 small, tender Brussels sprouts.

The schnitzel was somewhat smaller, thicker and more tender than the ones we saw on a trip to Germany. Zambrano later explained she prefers to use pork butt steaks, which have a bit more fat than chops, to make the dish more moist and tender.

Sauerbraten is another classic dish. Marinated beef (Heyka's uses eye of round) is braised and topped with a sweet-and-sour gravy that delivers a delicious flavor. It is served with traditional sides of red cabbage, salt potatoes and backobst (cooked dried fruit). Salt potatoes simply are chunks of potato boiled in salt water and sprinkled with parsley.

One of the more unusual dishes, which Zambrano said she is considering dropping from the menu, is the one I ordered -- curry schnitzel ($8.50). A breaded pork cutlet was topped with a mild yellow curry dotted with pieces of apple and banana, which gave it an oddly intriguing flavor.

Another entree, panierte huehnerbrust ($6.95), was an "Hawaiian" chicken dish, featuring a breaded chicken breast topped with ham, pineapple and melted provolone cheese.

For dessert we shared a piece of schwarzwalderkirschtorte ($4.50), a doughy Black Forest cake with layers of cherries, whipped cream and chocolate cake, plus a serving of doughy apple strudel with raisins, topped with a layer of vanilla pudding and chocolate shavings.

The strudel is purchased locally from Siegi's Sausage Factory. Zambrano said it is the only dish the restaurant doesn't prepare itself from scratch, "and eventually we will do it, too."

Since we were there, the restaurant also has begun serving a complimentary appetizer of sliced cucumbers in a vinaigrette dressing.

Heyka's Heimat (Hi-kuhs Hi-mut) serves a few beers, including one German brand. It is awaiting a license to sell high-point German beers.

Ginny Cooper is the day-to-day manager for Heyka's, located in the Boardwalk Shopping Center, on the northeast corner of 71st Street and 161st East Avenue.

It is decorated with photos of Germany, beer steins, dolls, clothing, wooden shoes and fresh flowers in glass vases. White walls are criss-crossed with dark wood beams to give the room a German look.

Windows on two sides of the room allow in plenty of sunshine. Laminate wood tables are surrounded by wooden chairs with black cushions and sit on a ceramic tile floor. Plans are in the works to create a new patio space.

We asked Heyka how someone who grew up in northern Germany could tolerate the recent soaring temperatures in Tulsa.

"Oh, I'm so Okie now," she said. "I visited Germany in March and April and nearly froze."

Well it's a ladies night, and the feelings right, well it's a ladies night....oh what a night, OH WHAT A NIGHT! Do you feel it ladies? Well we were in this picture, which was actually not taken last night but somehow I made it home without a picture of our group!

Even so, last night was fun wasn't it? And boy am I feeling it today. Definitely shouldn't have had that last taste of wine...but boy toy bartender was awfully pretty. I think it was worth it. Except for that one traumatic moment...remember? I wrote about it for those of you who missed it. Oh well, I guess we can't be cool forever. I just hoped that our cool factor would at least last until my kids hit high school which would then automatically put me in the NOT cool category.
